Why a paperweight museum?
The Paperweight Museum is the fruit of our personal love for
paperweights. All the effort that went into the creation of our
new museum space comes from our personal passion for the art
form.
Our museum is different from other museums around the country,
in that its only focus is paperweights. The sole mission of the
paperweight museum is to see that paperweights receive the recognition
and representation they deserve in the art world. We have created
a place for scholarly learning where curators and experienced
collectors can share knowledge and insights about this special
art. We have also created a welcoming space, where anyone from any
walk of life, from students, to future glass artists, can visit
and become inspired about this glass art.
The San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley are one of the
top tourist spots in the nation. Already, the museum has started
to attract visitors from around the world.
Even the most spectacular flowers grow from small seeds. We
know our museum is small, but we are very proud of the dream
we have started to cultivate. As our endowment grows, we hope
to eventually purchase an independent building to house the museum's
collection.
How can you help?
We know that in order to make our dream succeed we need the help
of others. First, we are seeking collectors who are interested
in donating paperweights to become part of the permanent collection
of the museum. Second, we are seeking financial donations to
help build the museum's endowment. A third option is to donate
a paperweight that could be sold
to help raise funds.
In addition to these things, we are seeking prominent collections
that can be temporarily loaned to the museum for exhibit as part
of a schedule of bimonthly shows. We want to make the museum
an exciting venue that glass lovers will visit again and again.
We need your support!
Unlike other museums, the Paperweight Museum does not currently
have an endowment to support it for generations to come. We rely
on the generosity of paperweight enthusiasts from around the
world to aid in the acquisition of pieces for our permanent collections
and to help pay for operating costs.
The museum currently has two primary acquisition goals:
1. We are seeking works from recognized 20th (and 21st) century
paperweight makers, including their early, mid-career, and most
recent creations. We would like to acquire at least one representative
piece from each period, or at least three pieces from each prominent
artist.
2. We are attempting to acquire a representative example of
each design produced by the great French glasshouses of the mid-nineteenth
century.
We view these as the two most important areas of paperweight
making, and our goal is to build a collection that will educate
collectors from around the world about the art of the paperweight.
The International Paperweight Society Foundation is a designated
501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Your tax-deductible donation
will ensure that the art of the paperweight thrives for many
years to come.
