James
Shaw
From L. H. Selman Ltd.
James Shaw creates brilliant and provocative crystal
sculptures incorporating precision cutting and laminating techniques.
Using his knowlege of glass optics, he creates sculptures with
brilliant inner dimensions and a shifting sense of space.
His career began in 1976, when James Lundberg hired him to work
at Lundberg Studios grinding and polishing paperweights. Eventually,
Shaw founded his own business, Star Cut Glass, where he specialized
in the cutting and engraving of contempory blown glass and the
restoration of antique paperweights. A chance encounter with
a chipped lens at a flea market in 1985 began his artistic career.
"To remove the chip I flattened out the edge and set
it upright," recalls Shaw. "I was facinated
by the optical effects that were taking place when viewed from
different angles. I was hooked."
