The "Great Salamander" paperweights or more correctly the "Great Lizard" weights were produced by
a little known factory in France during the mid-nineteenth century. The factory
called Pantin produced these wonderful reptiles as well as a small number of
floral weights. Very little is known about their paperweight production. However, the lizards are
among the most highly prized examples of the glass makers' art. The intricate workmanship
and delicate florals found in these reptilian wonders are a challenge to any modern day glass
artist. The size alone--over 4"--makes the annealing process a challange even with
today's computer-driven furnaces. Of the 14 known examples, over half are in museum collections;
the others are in private collections. L.H. Selman Ltd. is proud to announce the
"unearthing" of the latest addition to this body of work. Please feel free to visit our
gallery and pay homage to one of the rarest and most appealing of glass objects--The Great
Lizard.
