About Dewees Cochran
Ella Dewees Cochran was born in Dallas, Texas to a
well-to-do family, and spent her early years moving about in the East.
Her family eventually came to reside at Meadowbrook in New Hope Pennsylvania,
where the natural beauty of the setting nourished her lifelong love
of nature. After art studies in the U.S. and Europe, Dewees married
and lived in Europe until 1933. Upon her return to the United States
she began to concentrate on doll-making and experienced her first
success with the Topsy Turvy dolls and The Philadelphia Ladies. Soon
she began to create her Portrait Dolls™. For her Look-A-Likes™ Dewees
designed six basic heads for dolls that could be completed to look
like any child. Dewees often referred to her Look-A-Likes™ as the
American Children™. The Effanbee Doll Company selected four of the
dolls and produced them in a series called The American Children™
by Dewees Cochran. She moved her home and studies to Norwich, Vermont
in 1947, and from there created her Grow-Up dolls. Hailed by the Doll
Museum of London, England, as one of the outstanding creations of
the 20th century, this is a series of dolls that ‘grow up’, with a
doll for each period at significant stages of childhood, After retiring
to California in 1960, Dewees wrote her autobiography, As If They
Might Speak.
